RSPCA
The RSPCA is a community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.
The RSPCA runs 40 shelters and employs around 1,000 staff, which helps to improve the lives of Australian animals. This month’s Sewalong is dedicated to helping each state’s RSPCA animal shelter by providing items that they desperately need to help care and rehabilitate each animal to get them into loving homes.
You can choose to donate directly to your state’s shelter or ship the donation off to a different state based on what they need.
SEWALONG BRIEF
- This Sewalong will run from 1st April – 30th April, 2017
- Each RSPCA Shelter desperately needs any of the following items:
We have listed some example sewing patterns here but please feel free to use your own patterns.
Projects
Cat Toys
Create some cat toys to keep the kitties amused and entertained while they stay in these shelters.
Dog Toys
Create some dog toys to keep them excited and engaged while they stay in these shelters. Here are some free crafty projects using the following items:
Blankets
Create or decorate a blanket to keep puppies, kittens and other animals in shelters warm this winter. Fleece, thermal or flannel blanket are appreciated.
Towels
Towels are a valuable item in all shelters. If you wish to embroider them with something warm and friendly, these can be used to keep the animals clean and sanitary.
Specific Location Projects:
RSPCA Queensland – Wildlife care
The wildlife care unit in Queensland also cares for sick or injured animals, so if you’re looking for a sewing project they would love the following donations:
RSPCA New South Wales
If you can create a cat or dog bed this state would love your donation.
RSPCA South Australia
With the shelter catering for a number of sick or injured birds, they would love some bird toy donations. These are used in aviaries, so a soft toy that can hang from the side of the cage that includes a bell is ideal.

THINGS TO REMEMBER
These Sewalongs are a great way to get inspired by what everyone creates, while giving to a worthy cause. If you’re new to sewing or embroidering then don’t despair. This is a great chance for you to get involved and have fun no matter what the outcome.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO CREATE EACH PROJECT?
Since we are featuring a new charity each month, the April Sewalong will run from 1st – 30th April, 2017. However, feel free to create any of the projects above at any time of the year and drop them to your nearest RSPCA shelter.
You can view the full list of Charity Projects online.
